Have you ever thought about hiking an active volcano?

To be honest I haven’t. Before I came to Indonesia.

After a year of active backpacking around the country, I have a lot interesting stories to tell and useful information to share. Here is a video about what are in my opinion TOP-5 volcanoes to visit in Indonesia.

So here we go,

TOP-5 volcanoes to visit in Indonesia:

  • Krakatau – a small volcanic island all that’s left after the world famous Krakatau eruption in 1883. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to get on the island itself, but you can look at it from the boat. Location: between Sumatra and Jawa.
  • Bromo national park – one of the most stunning sunrises you will see in Indonesia. Location: East Jawa.
  • Kawa Ijen – it feels like hell. I am totally serious. Don’t believe me? Just go and try it for yourself. Location: East Jawa.
  • Rinjani – if you are ready for a long road – it takes about 3 days to complete the trip. The view on top of Rinjani is stunning though and it’s totally worth the effort. Location: Lombok island, West Nusa Tenggara.
  • Kelimutu – you’ve probably seen the picture of 2 colourful volcanic lakes, one of which is changing colours on social media? That’s about Kelimutu. One of the lakes is sometimes green and sometimes red, depending on the season. It’s a very easy hike and an astonishing sunset view. Location Flores island, East Nusa Tenggara.

There are no better or worse volcanoes. They are all very different and they all offer incredible experiences.

If you’ve been to these or other volcanoes in Indonesia, please let me know which is your favourite in the comments below. And if you’re planning to go, – visit Ijen, you’ll not be disappointed 🙂
